7 Idle Relearn Steps.

A “Throttle Body Re-learn” (also known as KAM Reset or Idle Relearning) must be performed after installing a Throttle Body on your Toyota or Ford. If this isn’t done correctly the car will not idle properly causing the vehicle to loose power and in rare cases stall while driving. Toyota has taken over the market in recent years, with a new number one being crowned every month. But it wasn’t always like that. Back in the mid 1900s Ford was dominating the roads, but today it seems like everyone is driving around in Toyotas. When it comes to fuel economy, no automaker does it better than Toyota. This is largely because the company has a history of doing some pretty scary things to squeeze more miles from each gallon. Yet no advancement in fuel efficiency can be found quite so tasty as Toyota’s sweet little invention called the “idle relearn,” which is definitely not a bad idea at all.

The Toyota idle relearn procedure, also known as the Toyota throttle relearn procedure, is used on some models with throttle body injection (TBI) systems. If the throttle sensor has been disconnected then the tbw (throttle body wide angle) and tbv (throttle body narrow angle) will be incorrect.

Steps to follow (Toyota 1998-date)

  1. Put the key in the ignition.
  2. Turn the key to the on position, without cranking the engine and wait 5sec, then turn it back to off position.
  3. Repeat this step again.
  4. Crank the engine.
  5. Apply the parking brakes.
  6. With your leg on the brake set the gear in drive.

Have you ever wondered what the KAM is and how it works on your Ford vehicle? The acronym stands for Keep Alive Memory, which sounds absolutely terrifying at first. It’s really a complex yet basic computer function that optimizes the way your Ford vehicle performs. If a vehicle has been sitting for an extended period, the K.A.M can lose its stored data. This means that when you start your vehicle again and go through your normal vehicle start-up process, the K.A.M will be acting as if it was reset during a factory recall or at the dealership during servicing.

A common software failure code (CSC) on many late model Fords is a no crank, no start, or engine starts and then dies. The CSC code often ends in either 32, 33, 39 and 46. Each of these codes is for a different area of the engine electronic control module (ECM). There are specific things that must be checked for each CSC code. The root cause of all these codes are two (2) basic issues.

Steps to follow (Ford)

  1. While the vehicle is stationary apply the parking brakes.
  2. Shift the gear to park and turn off all accessories.
  3. Run the engine till you reach normal operating temperature (5-10min will do)
  4. Allow the engine to idle for about 2 minutes.
  5. Turn on the air conditional for at least one minute.
  6. With you leg on the brake, release the hand brake with the air conditional still on, sift the gear to drive and allow idle for 2 minutes.

There you have it! A quick and simple way to perform an idle relearn on Toyotas/Fords. When there are any changes made to the sensors or components of your engine, the idle speed is thrown off which can cause hesitation when driving and possible stalling under certain conditions. Usually the symptoms of an Idle Relearn are random hesitation and rough idling, commonly causing a diagnostic trouble code that is labeled as a P0340 (Idle Air Control Circuit).
