Meet the new Porsche Cayenne
On Thursday, Porsche unveiled a Cayenne convertible design concept that was made not long after the first-generation Cayenne debuted on sale at the tail end of 2002. This was nearly to a decade before Nissan unveiled its Murano CrossCabriolet.
The coupe, the expanded version of the Cayenne with third-row seats, and the convertible were the other two extra Cayenne body styles that were scrutinized. The convertible was one of the models that was examined. With the introduction of the four-door Cayenne Coupe in the third-generation Cayenne, Porsche was finally able to partially realize its vision for the coupe body style.
The open-top vehicle is preserved in the collection of the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, Germany at the present day. It is not a functioning prototype but rather a design sketch that Porsche refers to as a Package Function Model, or PFM for short. This model was created by Porsche. As a result of the design team experimenting with a variety of various possibilities for the taillights, the rear end appears to be split between two distinct styles.
The designers chose a body with two doors and a roll bar in the shape of a targa for the back of the vehicle. They hoped that this would assist offer some rigidity even with the roof removed. The interior is identical to that of the production Cayenne, with the exception of a lower windscreen.
And the convertible roof is an automated design that folds away beneath a rear deck that can be opened along two axes, allowing it to flip open to house the roof, or it can be operated like a conventional trunk lid. This allows the convertible roof to be stored in a more compact space when not in use.
The design buck for a Cayenne convertible was never developed farther beyond the concept stage. According to Porsche, profit forecasts for the vehicle weren’t looking so good, and there was also the question of whether or not it had an appealing enough appearance to wear the Porsche label. There is little question that the bizarre appearance of the Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet was one of the factors that led to its failure.
