Myth 1: Polaris has been producing scramblers since the 1960s.
Fact: The Polaris brand was created by its owner, William Barris in 1950. According to James Cameron in his book, “The Triumph Legend”, his father bought a Victory T1010 motorcycle and subsequently shifted it to scrap metal, although it was later re-purposed by Barris.
The T1010 was originally built for the British Royal Navy. Cameron’s story is confirmed by a document found on Polaris’ website revealing that in 1982,
Barris bought a Triumph 1050cc Classic from the U.S. and converted it into a racing bike using parts from Triumph (it was the first colour bike in U.S. history that wasn’t custom built).
The T1010 was based on the 1100cc version and featured a frame design by Chris Gandy, who later created the T1050 (a bike which later made an appearance on Skid Row).
This particular Triumph was raced by several teams at Le Mans in the 1970s, with the bike being raced by both Colin Edwards and Tom Pryce.
The T1010 was first used in competition at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in March 1971, where it was driven by Roger Clarke, Olivier Gendebien and Stephen Scott. It went on to race at several other events throughout 1971 and early 1972.
